Firm Beliefs I grew up a neglected weed-ignorant of liberty and having no experience of it. Those were the words spoken by the famous Harriet Tubman. Harriet never felt happy, nor content, she always felt uneasy. She feared a white man would carry her away. Harriet helped over 300 slaves escape to freedom during the Civil War. She organized scouts, and she cared for orphans. Harriet used her difficult childhood of living on a plantation to help guide others to achieve their own dreams. During her extraordinary lifetime, Harriet Tubman affected the lives of others in a positive way. Thats why we should have a national holiday to venerate her and all of her accomplishments. During her lifetime, Harriet lent a helping hand to others. After escaping slavery herself, Harriet wanted to help others as well. She became a conductor in a secret group known as the Underground Railroad, and freed up to 300 slaves. By her being secretive, mysterious, sneaky, thievish, Harriet Tubman once again lent out her arm with a lot to give. Not only did she help during the Underground Railroad, but also she helped during the Civil War. During the Civil War, she organized former slaves to spy and scout networks. They operated behind the Confederate lines, from bases on islands off the coast of the Carolinas. She knew where they were hiding along the shore, and even found out where they had placed torpedoes, and barrels with gunpowder in the water. Harriet became known as the first woman in American history to lead a military expedition. For in order to be in the military, she needed to be brave, and she needed to risk her life for the sake of others. During this time, Harriet said she, decided to help the Union Army because she wanted freedom for all of the people who were forced into slavery, not just the few she could help by herself. Harriet helped many slaves, and helped the Union army during the Civi l War. She might even affected the outcome of the war. Thats why we need a national holiday to remember her bravery. Harriet Tubman showed having empathy for someone goes a long way. After the Civil War ended, Harriet cared for invalid blacks, orphans, and the elderly. She moved in with her parents in Auburn, New York, and began taking in orphans and the elderly. This practice eventually led to the foundation of the Harriet Tubman Home of the Indigent Aged Negroes, which stayed in practice until several years after her death. Being friendly, kind, caring, and brave goes a long way. Harriet Tubman is an excellent role model for others. Americans should celebrate her practices and kindness in a national holiday for a special woman in American history. Harriet Tubman is an extraordinary woman. Over her long life of 93 years, she has affected the lives of millions. Her positive attitude toward negativity makes her an excellent role model. Reformation is similar to rehabilitation. Reformation theory believes that the shame associated with the sentencing may cause the criminal to see the wrongs of his action and help him to move away from that path. In an attempt to eliminate any chances of rebellion against the Party, they created the new language of â€Å"Newspeak. † Newspeak eliminates any controversial words along with all synonyms, antonyms and verbs. By doing this, the government has gained the power of meaning. Syme, a specialist in Newspeak tells the main character Winston exactly what control Newspeak has allowed the Party to have. â€Å"Don’t you see the whole aim of Newspeak is the narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall all make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. † (Orwell 54). Along with that, the Party also has complete control of written language by altering history related documents to match the history that is in favor of this political power. The altering of these documents is what happens to be Winston’s job. While at work Winston pondered the power of being able to control the past, coming to a startling realization. As written by the narrator of the novel, â€Å"the past, he reflected had not only been altered, it had actually been destroyed. For how could you establish even the most obvious fact when there existed no record outside your own memory? † (Orwell 36). On top of being historically mislead, citizens are restricted of express any thought of their own or any way to voice against the Party. When you no truthful record for the past, the past doesn’t exist. When you have no words to associate with a meaning, the meaning behind the word then vanishes just like the political history of Oceania. For these reasons, a society with government restricted verbal and written language is one that proves to be dystopian.

I think the nether grave is the best story, because it’s very relatable. Majority of kids get bullied and or go through a bad time at least once in their life, so they either find ways to escape it or lie to people about how â€Å"good† their life is so nobody knows how bad it actually it. People connect more with things they can relate too. Fact. But, ‘†A Sound of Thunder† is a better story that can be classified as science fiction because it has something to do with time travel, dinosaurs, and history. â€Å"A Sound of Thunder† fits into the science fiction category because it’s based on time travel, dinosaurs ruling the Earth, and staying on the correct path so he doesn’t â€Å"change the course of history†. Those are all science related things so that’s the science part. It’s fiction because its fact but science related. No one can go back in time or change the course of history that’s where the fict ion comes into play. In the story â€Å"nether grave† it’s harder to classify it as science fiction, because it’s not like it has something to do with time travel or dinosaurs, but it does have to do with gaming and leaving behind his own life to be a jaguar in a video game life. It does have to with people and how their life effects their life decisions which is science. It’s fiction because people can’t trade in their bad life to be in a video game. In the story â€Å"A Sound of Thunder† he uses sensory imagery, which uses very descriptive words to evoke images of sight, sounds, feelings, touch, and smells. In the first line, the protagonist swallows and they tell us about the â€Å"muscles around his mouth† and he waves his hand, while in the background there comes a â€Å"sound like a gigantic bonfire.† In the story the nethergrave it was hard to tell you were in another world because of the lack of detail. They didn’t give you a time period too, so there isn’t really to relate to besides the fact that it’s about a boy who uses his computer to hide and lie about his life. The theme in the story â€Å"A sound of thunder† you have to stay on the correct path in life or it will go all wrong. The plans you thought you had will change and everything will be challenging and hard. In the stor y the â€Å"Nether grave†, the theme of the story I believe it is when you feel like your life is bad, don’t go on trying to hide what’s going on. I think the first story has the best theme â€Å"A sound of thunder† because it is true. If you don’t stay on the correct paths of life and associate yourself with good people, your life and plans  can all change. You can’t have the both of best worlds.
